SURF,
SKATE AND ROCK ART: 22,5
x 30,5 cm - 212 pages - full colour

The selection of illustrations found in this book represents a sampling
of Jim Phillips' works and his life. Comprehensively, it covers more
than fifty years, and sheds much light on his formative years and
early influences. Because of Phillips' prolific output for art, there
is an incredible amount of work available, and it has been assembled
for this book. Collectors contributed images from as far as Japan,
Hawaii and Spain. You will find that the collection of works speaks
for itself, offering an array of styles, media and subjects that represents
a span of over a half century at the drawing table.
Many of Jim's artworks have been lost or destroyed over the years.
Early drawings were either confiscated by teachers or given away.
Hand drawn t-shirts have long since worn out and been delegated to
rag drawers. Most of his mural work has suffered demolition of the
walls that contained them, and dozens of his painted cars have been
crushed into scrap iron. His art school portfolio and paintings were
lost in Mexico, most of his art on surfboards have turned brwon in
the sun and delaminated, and it is suspected that a good deal of his
posters were destroyed by horrified parents. One batch of Tracy art
shown here was rescued from a dumpster by a Mr Novak. Other works
have been preserved by collectors and brought to light in recent years.
But without doubt, there is enough art presented here to delight and
instruct.
